NFL Lockout Delayed with Seven
NFL Lockout Delayed with Seven
The NFL lockout that has been looming for months has been postponed at least a week thanks to a sevenday extension in negotiations between the players and owners.
The collective bargaining agreement was set to expire last night at midnight before an agreement was reached for a 24hour extension. And, after meeting again on Friday, the two sides have agreed to hold off on a lockout for another week while trying to settle the dispute.
The important question now is whether another week will make a difference in what have already been protracted negotiations to avoid an NFL lockout. Is there any reason to believe the NFL Players Association and owners can reach an agreement in seven days to put this whole mess to bed?
Unlikely. In an ultimate statement of greed, the owners continue to refuse to budge, putting the players in an uncomfortable position to hold their ground and potentially ensure a lockout. If that is the case and it's looking more and more likely the hope would be that things would be resolved before any games are lost to the dispute.
The whole situation is maddening for fans of the league, and if games are lost it moves from upsetting to unforgivable. Casual fans shouldn't have to sit and listen to billionaires argue with millionaires while the most popular sport in America disappears from the limelight.
A solution needs to be reached to avoid an NFL lockout. Whether a sevenday extension is enough or not remains to be seen, but it's at least a little taste of progress in what has otherwise been a rather hopeless situation.
The owners need to swallow at least a measure of their pride and get a deal done. There is no excuse for halting a sport that is raking in billions of dollars, particularly as most of the nation struggles to make ends meet during a down economy.
The whole situation is frustrating for fans. But if an NFL lockout emerges even after the aforementioned seven day extension, it becomes the ultimate insult to those who support the sport.

Athletes and Sports Psychology
Athletes and Sports Psychology
When the chips are down, the athlete often cannot share his/her inner fears, anxiety and anger issues with the coach or their parents.
The Sports Psychologist, who should be Certified and welltrained in examining the whole person, can provide the athlete with skills that can really develop an elite athlete from a good athlete. Coaches and trainers focus almost exclusively on left brain activities, including game plans, strategy, technique, speed, agility, muscle building, etc. Most athletes focus exclusively on training using the left brain. Accordingly, athletes are cheated because their right brains are being ignored.
Right brain activities include balance, emotions, music, and visualization, all of which can really enhance performance. The Sports Psychologist trains the athlete to exercise the right brain along with the left brain. For example, teaching mental toughness skills (including intensity, confidence and emotions during key moments in competition) critically important in peak performance.
Overcoming pressure is another right brain activity that can be taught to athletes. These skills include recognizing the causes of emotions during key moments in competition and how to modify those emotions, if necessary.
Stress management skills are critical and necessary if the athlete wants to compete successfully and consistently. In fact, the athlete with too much relaxation is at the same disadvantage as the athlete with too much tension. The key for each athlete is to learn where the exact mixture of relaxation and tension lies. This is where the Clinical Sports Psychologist with hypnosis training can really help the athlete zone in on that level and learn to modify it as game conditions warrant. Too much tension is lowered by deep breathing and calming thoughts and not enough tension is raised by jumping, exercises, etc. to raise the heart beat.
Goal setting, while a left brain activity, is closely linked with right brain activities, such as emotions, patience, optimism and learning to overcome obstacles. These are also key skills that the Sports Psychologist can teach the athlete.
In addition, there are many issues in an athlete life that can impact her/his sports performance. Consequently, a comprehensive initial history and mental status exam is necessary in order to plan the treatment. In fact, many parents bring their youngsters to me in order to teach them life skills that will also be used in their sport. For example, the young athlete who gets overly anxious during competition also gets overly anxious prior to taking a test. The same coping skills can be taught for both issues.
Perhaps the best right brain skill the athlete can learn is selfhypnosis and visualization. I have referred to these skill sets as the "unfair advantage," because they really propel athletes to enhance their performance.

Russians plan ay gamesin Moscow
A Russian group is planning to hold a "gay games" in Moscow days after the
Sochi Winter Olympic Games and is calling on international athletes to come and
support the event.
Viktor Romanov, the chairman of the board of the Russian LGBT (Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) Sport Federation, said the event - which will be for Russian amateur sports people - was set to open in February 2014 after the closing ceremony of the Sochi Games.
"We are starting on February 26 so that people who want to - sports people, officials, journalists - can travel from Sochi to Moscow to support us," Romanov told AFP in an interview on late Monday.
"We will be grateful to any official or any 颅famous figure who comes to support us."
The group plans to hold the Russian Open Games in Moscow from February 26 to March 2, 2014, three days after the Olympic Games end in Sochi.
Romanov insisted the group was not breaking a controversial law signed by President Vladimir Putin in June that bans the promotion of homosexuality to minors.
"The law does not cover us because we are not doing propaganda of homosexuality, but propaganda of sport and a healthy lifestyle," Romanov said.
"We aren't breaking the law."
Nevertheless, he called the games a response to the homophobic climate.
"We understand very well that with this difficult time that we are in, we can't stand aside."
The federation does not need to apply for permission from the authorities to hold sports events - unlike the organizers of gay pride protests.
"We will hire sports venues, they will be 'closed' ... we will produce badges, special passes for all the participants," Romanov said.
He said that the organizers would inform the sports ministry, the Moscow city government and the police of all the events.
The group, which is officially registered as a noncommercial organization, has held sports events for several hundred members over the last three years.
